Reading is the Key to Academic Success
For most Tigard-Tualatin students, fifth grade marks the final year of a separate class devoted entirely to reading. Twality sixth graders are fortunate to receive forty-five minutes of reading instruction in addition to forty-five minutes of writing (language arts) instruction. I am thankful our students receive this additional instruction time, because I firmly believe that reading is the key skill necessary for a student to reach their potential of academic success. Students with strong reading skills can better access information in all other academic areas.
We will work had all year to strengthen the reading skills of all of our students, from working to close the gap to reading on grade level for some to pushing our strongest readers to reach milestones well beyond even middle-school content.
